Roundup Delayed!

The BLM was going to round-up yet MORE horses (up to 500 more!) from the Calico Mountain herd area! Thankfully, spring foaling season stopped them from proceeding with the roundup; so, we get to wait until AFTER foaling season (when foals are born...) to see the BLM destroy yet more of our heritage! Fabulous! Read more about it on the AWHR Calico Mountain Horses page!

Let Them Roam Free!

This picture is one that I LOVE. There's a poem on it, and it's just darling! I think it speaks for the wild horses, straight for the heart!

A Wild Spirit
I belong in the wilderness,
and no one will ever tame me.
I run with the wind, dance with the river,
and fly with the eagles.
I am wild and free
no better life there is for me.

Before The Roundup - Pictures of The Calico Mountain Horses!

Here are a few pictures of the wild Calico Mountain horses before the tragic roundup by the BLM that killed 41 in the long run and took hundreds away from their homes.

The Calico Mountain Roundup

General Info

The BLM had a wild horse roundup scheduled for December 1st, 2009, but the roundup was postponed due to the IDAUSA - In Defense of Animals USA - filing a lawsuit against the roundups.

In this roundup, the BLM rounded up 1,922 wild horses. The BLM preformed this roundup to prevent an 'emergency' roundup later this summer due to overpopulation (for every 1 wild horse out there, there are 150 cattle - who's overpopulating?). As of now, there are only about 600 wild horses left to roam the Calico Mountains of Nevada. Before the roundup, there were over 3,000 wild horses and burros.

These horses from the Calico Mountains were sent to the Indian Lakes Road Short-Term holding facility in Fallon, NV, for preparation for adoption through BLM's adoption program or to be sent to long-term holding facilities.

Deaths

As of Thursday, February 11, 2010, there have been 41 deaths of Calico Mountain horses - due to colic, miscarriage, having to be put down, or otherwise - reported from the Indian Lakes road facility.

A Few Deadly Updates

Feb. 11 - one 9-month-old colt found dead due to colic
Feb. 10 - one 15-year-old stallion found dead
Feb. 9 - two mares were euthanized because of poor body condition
Feb. 8 - another 15-year-old stallion was euthanized because of poor body condition
Feb. 7 - one mare and one stallion were euthanized due to poor body condition, and one foal miscarriage was noted
Feb. 6 - one 6-year-old colt died
Feb. 5 - one mare was found with a spinal injury and had to be euthanized; cause of injury was not discovered
Feb. 4 - two mares (15 & 18 yrs old) were euthanized, another mare ran into a wall and suffered a neck fracture and had to be euthanized, and one mare arrived on-site with a lame leg, and was found that that leg was broken; in result, she was euthanized
Feb. 3 - one 25-year-old mare was euthanized
Feb. 2 - no deaths
Feb. 1 - one 12-year-old mare was euthanized, and one foal miscarriage was noted

So, What Does This Add Up To?

For a grand total, throughout 11 days in February 2010, there were 15 deaths, and two foal miscarriages. What does that say about what's happening to these animals? I'm absolutely sure that if these animals had not been forced to move off of their homeland, 99.9% of them would NOT have died in those 11 days. Virtually, the BLM is killing these horses. I could've gone on with the horse death toll counts, but I've decided not to. The horses were rounded up in December, and in three months, there have been a total death count of 41 animals. 41 ANIMALS!!! That is a lot of horses, you guys.

If you've paid attention, and if you've read my previous post, you'll notice that the BLM is NOT what they appear to be. They claim that, by removing hundreds of horses from their homelands, they are protecting our land and freeing more space for cattle. What does it look like, though? Doesn't it look to you like they are killing off horses with no conscience? That sure is what this looks like to me!

Way to go, BLM. What the heck? Why? WHY would you just destroy 41 horses (so far), and take thousands more off of their homelands? These are the questions running through your head right now as you're thinking "Oh, shoot. This is terrible. How can I stop this?" Well, the answer is this: send a letter to the president, or sign a petition! I WILL find a petition online or something, and if you want, you can sign it. I found one the other day where thousands of people had signed it. Obviously, thousands of us want this madness stopped. The question is: Do YOU?

What The Heck, BLM?

Have you heard about what the BLM (Bureau of Land Management) is doing to the wild mustangs of Nevada and Montana and every other state? They are chasing these horses - thousands of them - down mountains and away from their homes. How are they doing this? They fly loud, noisy, scary (to the horses) helicopters to scare the horses into running. The helicopters chase the horses into pens, where the stallions are separated from the mares/foals. Then, trailers arrive. The trailers haul the horses to what are called holding facilities.

At these holding facilities, the mares are separated from their foals. The stallions, who lead the herds of majestic mustangs, are kept in a pen all together. One thing that almost every horse person knows: NEVER put two stallions into the same pen, let alone a hundred. These stallions fight for rights to mares, sometimes to the death. So, with so many stallions kept in these pens, and the mares just a few fences away, what else do the stallions do but fight. The stallions don't know any better - they most likely assume that if they defeat the other stallions, they can get back to their mares.

The thing is, some of these holding facilities are long-time holding facilities. This means that hundreds or thousands of once-wild horses will be kept in these tight spaces for weeks, months, or even years!

How do these horses finally get out of that he!! hole? They get adopted if they are OK-ed by vets and they are halter broken (meaning they accept being led) and trailer broken (meaning they accept riding in a trailer). But 60% of these horses don't get adopted. Some of them end up in slaughterhouses. Some of them end up in good homes. Some of them don't end up going anywhere. There are so many things that can happen to these horses. What makes me want to destroy the BLM is the fact that mares and foals are separated, so that they can't be in contact with each other! That's like taking a 2-year-old kid and taking it away from its mother. Imagine what that's like to the horses, who depend on their mothers' milk and protection. Horses are prey animals, meaning that they eat grass and plants and they are preyed on by other animals, like mountain lions.

The BLM says that there are too many wild horses, and that they are eating all of the cattle's food. Well, you should know this: For every 1 wild horse, there is 150 cattle out in the wild west! What does THAT say about the lies the BLM has told?

B - breaking up wild herds
L - lying to us about their actions
M - meanly destroying our heritage

I hope you get the picture by now: BLM NEEDS TO STOP THIS MADNESS. Wild horses are America's heritage, and BLM is taking them away! This has to stop! Sometimes, there are protests against this wild attempt to take away our history and heritage. But most of the time, no one does anything about it!

I just thought that I would raise awareness of this idiotic move by the BLM. There have been quite a history of roundups, and an amazingly low amount of adopted horses. Pass this on to any horsey people you know, so that they can know about it, too! Pass it on to non-horsey people, even! We need to raise awareness. You don't have to donate money, or do anything like that to help stop this. All you need to do - if you want to, you don't even have to - is write to Senator Salazar, who is a U.S. senator and is the mastermind behind these roundups. We CAN help, and I'm sure we WILL. Please help.

Thank you for reading, and if you are against the BLM's wild horse roundups, put this in your status/signature: "The BLM is breaking up wild horse herds, lying to us about their actions, and meanly destroying America's heritage. STOP IT BEFORE IT GETS OUT OF CONTROL."
