Cloud is a wild stallion mustang of the Pryor (or Arrowhead, as the Crow Indians call them) Mountains.. Here are some videos and links to information about Cloud, Little Cloud (Cloud's Son), and Cloud's Band.
Below is one of the saddest videos I've ever watched - It makes me both sad and furious that the BLM would even think about taking these beautiful and breathtaking creatures away from their homes.
Cloud's band - as of July 2009 - consists of only 190 horses, and BLM wanted to remove HALF of those horses. Cloud is a very special horse, and his movements and such have been recorded since he was born. His band isn't very large, and BLM wants to take half of his horses from their homes and family. This means they could take foals - there was one roundup where a 2-month-old foal was removed and taken to a holding facility. There was a risk that Cloud himself would be removed from the Mountains, and that is a BIG no-no for those of us who are against wild horse roundups. BLM could NOT guarantee that Cloud and his intermediate family wouldn't be removed from the mountains.
Cloud did end up being removed from the mountains on Saturday, September 26, 2009. His filly-daughter, Little Cloud, was also rounded up. Cloud's front right leg was lame, making it hard to walk. Little Cloud could just barely walk, and used most of her energy walking to water and food. The helicopter had to try 4 times - 4 TIMES! - to bring Cloud's band all the way to the holding pens. Overall, Cloud and his band must have run at least 30 miles, maybe more. The only reason that Cloud's band was captured was because the newest members were targeted for sale. At the roundup site, every single member of the band was run through a chute - including Cloud - and blood is drawn for DNA testing. Little Cloud also had to go through the chute.
To my knowledge, Cloud & Little Cloud were released back into the wild.
